Baker happy to race for silver in breakthrough season
Bjorn Baker is looking to make it gold and silver for New Zealand in the Sydney trainers premiership on the final day of the season.
Bakerâs Warwick Farm stable has made a late charge to be even on 57 wins with Godolphinâs James Cummings going to Randwick on Saturday.

While he has had more winners in a month than the 15 he has produced in July, it is his best month of winners in the metropolitan area.
âOur horses have been racing well at that higher level, which has been exciting, and it would be nice to finish it off with another couple of winners on Saturday,â Baker said. âIt is something you look at and think that would be a good achievement. Chris Waller is so far out in front, so it is like winning it if you run second.
âIt has taken time to get here, but to run second in the Sydney premiership would be a good recognition for all the work my team puts in.
âI have learned to be patient with my horses this season and things are going along really well.
âItâs great to see them going to the races performing really well at the moment. I think Iâm getting the best out of the horses that I have got. Iâm always mindful of what our horses cost ... Iâm always going for that return for my owners, and these horses have been providing that.â
The prospect of a good track has Baker excited for his in-form team.
âI have been waiting for a few of these to get on a good track. Bring The Ransom, Oâmudgee, Canasta and Heâs A Hotshot, it comes at a good time for them,â Baker said.
âI think Van Giz goes well on a good track and so does Night Of Power, so it might be a big day.â
Baker believes Canasta might be the best of his hopes at Randwick after four placings and a last-start fourth on wet tracks.
âCanasta is just that bit better on a good track. He has been racing really well on testing tracks that donât suit him,â Baker said. âHe deserves to get a win this campaign.
âHeâs a Hotshot is rock-hard fit now and a different horse on a firm track, so we will push forward with him again and they will have to try and catch him.â
While Baker is hoping to end the season with a flourish, Cummingsâ best chance from five runners probably rests with Kordia in the final race of the season.
