Senators cringeworthy finsta question comes back to haunt him as John Oliver jokes and Facebook apps go down

Comedian John Oliver joined the bandwagon of mockery towards US senator Richard Blumenthalâs clueless question about Facebook-owned Instagram. And the outage of Facebook-owned apps shone the spotlight anew on the US senatorâs seeming misunderstanding of how young people use the internet.
. On Sunday nightâs episode of Last Week Tonight, the host pointed out that just as Mr Blumenthal demanded the end of finsta, an aide could be seen in the background visibly cringing.
âThat is the expression of someone who knows theyâre going to have to stay late tonight explaining to their boss yet again what finsta is, but also what Twitter is, and why heâs getting roasted on it,â Oliver said.
At last weekâs Senate hearing on the impacts of social media on teenagersâ mental health, one question caught the internetâs attention.
âWill you commit to ending âfinstaâ?â Senator Richard Blumenthal asked Antigone Davis, Facebookâs global head of safety.
Ms Davis looked baffled. âFinstaâ is not, as the senator seemed to believe, an official product from Facebook or Instagram, but a slang term for a fake Instagram account someone might use to obscure their identity.
âSenator, again, let me explain,â Ms Davis responded. âWe donât actually do âfinsta.â What âfinstaâ refers to is young people setting up accounts where they may want to have more privacy.â
The senator persisted.
âFinsta is one of your products or services,â Mr Blumenthal said, incorrectly. âWeâre not talking about Google or Apple. Itâs Facebook, correct?â
âFinsta is slang for a type of account,â Ms Davis explained patiently.
âOk, will you end that type of account?â the Connecticut Democrat demanded.
âWe â" Iâm not sure I understand exactly what youâre asking,â Ms Davis stammered.
The exchange quickly drew ridicule on Twitter at the time. And on Monday, Snapchatâs Peter Hamby joked that Facebook had, indeed, taken down Finsta admist the companyâs widespread outage.
Other journalists joined in the fun.
The Independent has reached out to Mr Blumenthalâs office for comment, but has not heard back yet.
