Todd Viney tried for 13 years to bring home a premiership for the Demons, and even played in a grand final back in 1988, which ended in a disastrous 96-point loss.
But 33 years after that inglorious day, he witnessed his son Jack achieve what he couldn’t do.
A clean sweep for Petracca...
For almost three quarters it looked like we were headed for a grand final for the ages.
But Melbourne had different ideas as they blew the Bulldogs away late in the third quarter to secure an astonishingly lopsided victory.
Here is how each player fared when Jon Pierik and Andrew Stafford applied the microscope to their performances.

How are you feeling? That game was outstanding.
I tell you what, that third quarter is ours the whole season. Been challenged. Doggies were up by 19 points in the second quarter. Bayley [Fritsch] came out in the third quarter and responded. I’ve got such confidence our third quarter but that was so special. It is hard to put into words. Feels so unreal. So surreal.
What was going through your head? You were up against it. You stood up.
We knew the Doggies were going to throw a punch. We said, “We know how to play footy, get back to the basics, we stayed calmâ€. The third quarter. Our contest needed to get better. I can’t believe it. Leaders lifted and the team followed. I can’t believe it. I cannot believe it!
Jack Viney spoke to Channel Seven after the game...
Can you believe this? You’ve been through so much with this footy club. Can you sum it up?
My first year we won two games. My first game, we got beaten by 80 points. Second game, 150 points. We had supporters throwing scarves at us, laughing-stock of the competition. Now we’ve won a premiership, first time in God knows how long. I don’t think it is going to fully sink in until we get out of the crowd, inside and take a step back. Phenomenal.
So many great people around this footy club but you had the honour and the privilege of co-captaining this side with Nathan Jones in ’17, ’18, ’19. He went home to be there for the birth of his twins. What do you have to say to the great man?
He is a ginormous part of this. He can’t be here but I know he is here with us in spirit. Like I said, the start my career, that’s what Nathan faced for many more years than I did. He was the heart and soul of this football club for a long time. Still is. Stuck around through thick and thin. Big reason we got the job done for you, brother.
He leapt up on a dog and landed like a cat. And just like that, Melbourne’s No.31 kicked his fourth.
It was a moment symbolic of Bayley Fritsch’s uprising as a Demon. Understated. Sharp. Meaningful.
