  • Prominent Brownlow gowns are usually sourced from familiar dressmaking labels such as J’aton Couture and Con Ilio but this year’s young guests are experimenting with emerging brands.

In a sheer black dress, with a corset-inspired bodice and expressive sleeves, Emily Halverson, on the arm of the Lion’s Harris Andrews, has thrown her support behind Joash Teo’s label Joteo.

Teo only graduated from Queensland University of Technology in 2020 but is a designer to watch.

Now people will be watching even more closely.

The easiest way to stand out on the red carpet is by covering up.

No cleavage! No dress slit! It’s a revolution.

Congratulations to Lauren O’Shannassy, wife of Matthew Pavlich, for triumphing above the volume of the Concert Tie Neck Gown from Australian label Zimmermann’s Autumn/Winter ’21 collection.

The playful print is an antidote to sheer fabric, tulle and corset tops.

When it comes to longest time since a Brownlow Medal win, North Melbourne Kangaroos lead the field and they don’t look likely to end that streak tonight.

The Kangaroos haven’t produced a Brownlow Medal winner since West Australian great Ross Glendinning came to Victoria and dominated the competition to win the award in 1983.

The Kangaroos faithful will also point out ruckman Corey McKernan polled the same number of votes as winners Michael Voss and James Hird in 1996 but was suspended during the season so was ruled ineligible.

Some of the Kangaroos current young guns like Tom Powell, Will Phillips or Luke Davies-Uniacke might contend for the honour in future seasons. All three have shown positive signs so far.

Port Adelaide has yet to win a medal during their almost 30 years in the AFL but that run could end if Ollie Wines salutes tonight.

GWS Giants also join the Power and long-lost early VFL club University in being without a Brownlow Medallist.

Brownlow Medals by club: Sydney 14, Brisbane Lions 12, Western Bulldogs 10, St Kilda 10, Collingwood 9, Essendon 8, Richmond 7, Melbourne 7, Geelong 7, Hawthorn 6, North Melbourne 5, Carlton 5, West Coast 3, Fremantle 2, Gold Coast 1, Adelaide 1.

Scoring another goal with the one-sleeved trend is Monique Fontana.

Is it just me or is the red carpet less gimmicky and far more elevated this year?

Fontana’s gown is from Melbourne bridal boutique By Kinsman with the jewellery from Linneys.

Partner Patrick Cripps could get a job at The Met Gala with his train-wrangling skills.

2005 Brownlow medallist Ben Cousins has arrived at tonight’s medal ceremony in Perth after several years estranged from the game due to his drug addiction and his time in prison.

The AFL invited Cousins as they do all past winners and he attended with Kelley Hayes.

Cousins spoke to the media and said he was happy to be back at an AFL event and he had put in some work to get himself back to being able to be in the spotlight.

“I’ve had to put in a bit of work behind the scenes but that is all part of it,” Cousins said.

“You find yourself in different situations along the way but I’m just happy to be here.”

Cousins said whoever wins tonight will need a little luck in such a tight field.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been to one of the football industry nights so I’m looking forward to it,” Cousins said.

“There will be a little bit of nerves [for those in contention] but there has been plenty of players who have had good years so whoever wins it will need a bit of luck.”

They’re a fashion forward bunch in Brisbane, launching the red carpet action at The Gabba.

While Talia De Marco has brought the drama with this revealing corset gown by Melbourne’s Oglia-Loro Couture, we are captivated by Dayne Zorko’s bare ankles.

Please note, it is almost compulsory to have Couture in your name if you plan to dress Brownlow attendees.

Expect to see plenty of single-sleeved gowns tonight, with Dani Shuey raising one arm and the stakes with this dress from Perth label Meraki.

The understated jewellery is by Mountain and Moon, also from Perth. Bonus points for the relaxed hair and makeup.

Will this be the year that fake tan and bouncy curls are finally left behind?

Perth labels have been cleaning up as the city makes its debut hosting the main medal ceremony.

Jonte Designs, Suit Vault in Subiaco and jewellers Linneys were inundated with last-minute requests.
