Booster jab man 89 given parking ticket at Ramsbottom vaccination centre
An 89-year-old man has been slapped with a parking ticket while on a vaccination centre car park as he was being given his Covid booster jab.
A furious volunteer marshal at Ramsbottom Civic Hall, which has been used as a vaccination centre for nearly a year, said she is appalled at the practice of targeting motorists which she claims is working against the central principle of ease of vaccinations.
Jackie Griffiths, 61, a volunteer outdoor marshal at the vaccination centre for several months, says the issue of enforcement officers targeting cars started in October.
She said: âOnce all the car park bays are taken, thereâs an area where people park within the confines of the car park.
âI donât see a problem with that but itâs not marked bays. That is where people are getting tickets.
âAn 89-year-old man got ticketed in this way. I was standing by the hall and I noticed an elderly gentleman looking perturbed.
âHe was at the top of the hill looking at the car park signs. I asked if he was okay.
âHe was very upset and said heâd been given a ticket as he couldnât find anywhere else to park.
âI spoke to the management of the vaccination centre who were also upset and they contacted the council, who came down.
âI believe they said there was nothing they could do as they had to park in marked bays.â
Enforcement wardens could be seen at the car park as recently as last Friday and issued at least one ticket.
Jackie, also a volunteer litter picker, said she was "incensed" at this and had seen several other vehicles of people being vaccinated given tickets.
She said: âThe car park is on a hill and you get elderly people who have to drive up the hill into the car park and then walk down to the centre.
âThe bays are marked out but the paint is very worn.
âThereâs also the issue of leaves obscuring the lines at this time of year.
âPart of the problem was other motorists, who are not being vaccinated, using the car park spaces.
âThe council has provided these great facilities as a vaccination centre while at the same time youâve got these flipping car parking attendants working against the whole principle of ease of vaccination.
âIâm furious, really upset that an elderly gentleman was treated in this way. What on earth are they playing at?
A spokesman for Bury Council, said: âThe clinic at Ramsbottom Civic Hall has been extremely busy offering first and second doses of the coronavirus vaccine, and now booster jabs too.
âAs a result, the adjacent car park is often congested with people turning up for their vaccinations.
âThere is very limited room to manoeuvre, therefore it is essential that drivers park properly and in a bay in order to maximise the space available.
âWe have had a number of reports of cars being damaged due to drivers trying to negotiate other peopleâs poor parking.
âIf anyone feels they have wrongly been issued with a parking fine, we would advise them to lodge an appeal via the process outlined on the ticket.â
