âItâs true, itâs not a good look, itâs a terrible look,â Ihle said.
âBut the element thatâs in dispute...is that Toby Greene intended to make contact.
âThere really is no dispute about the umpireâs account.â
Gleeson (acting for AFL): âUmpires are untouchable. Itâs fundamental to our game.
âNothing is more important to the game.
âToby Greene broke that rule.
âCritically, he did it because he was angry.
âItâs a binary proposition really, he either intended to do it, or he didnât.â
âIt was insolent and it was contemptuous,â Gleeson says of Greeneâs actions.
âToby Greeneâs enraged, Matt Stevic is calm, respectful, defuses it.â
âI wasnât swearing at him, I used a swear word...especially during an AFL game, I do use a lot of swear words.â
Greene maintains that he wasnât angry during the incident nor that he intended to make contact with Stevic.
Gleeson claims âyou actually move closer towards him.â
Greene disagrees.
Gleeson claims Greene went out of his way to walk into Stevic. Greene again disagrees.
Ihle is stepping Greene through the Stevic incident in granular detail.
âI strongly disagreeâ the conduct was intentional or that he was disrespectful to Stevic.
âI highly respect Matt.
â[But] I donât think itâs a great look.
âI do apologise for making contact...I agree that itâs not a great look for the game.â
Greene says that had he realised at the time heâd made contact he would have apologised at it would have weighed heavily on him.
Toby Greene and Matt Stevic collide during the elimination final.
âItâs clear that there was some contact,â Greene says.
He agrees with Stevicâs classification of the incident as minor.
âI wasnât aware of the [contact] until I got asked about it in a post-match interview.â
Greeneâs recollection of the incident.
â[I] challenged [Stevic] on a decision.
âI was aware that I was very close to [Stevic].â
Greene says he needed to be close to Stevic to speak to him because it was a noisy environment.
âI certainly disagree that I was intending to make contact.â
Stevic says that at the time he didnât take the contact as being aggressive or demonstrative.
Gleeson then begins a re-examination of Stevic.
The umpire says âI donât think itâs a good look for the game.â
âI would say thereâs an element of it being disrespectful.â
Stevic reiterates that he didnât feel threatened by Greeneâs âminorâ contact.
Stevic says that when he was told by umpiresâ coach Michael Jennings post-match that the incident was âgetting some attention,â Stevic interpreted that as media attention.

Stevic: âAs Toby got closer to me he challenged me on a particular decision.
âWith regards to making match-day reports for players making contact with an umpire we need to be 100 per cent sure contact was intentional, unreasonable or unnecessary...I wasnât 100 per cent sure.
âSeeing the vision post-game made clear that I was stationary. I didnât step into Toby.â
Ihle asks Stevic about his mindset during the game.
âI didnât find [Greeneâs language] abusive or disrespectful.
âIn the heat of the game thereâs exchanges or conversations between players and umpires...I didnât feel abused.â
Stevic adds that he didnât feel insulted or threatened by the exchange either.
Audio from the incident shows that Greene told Stevic âhe took a f---ing dive,â complaining about a free kick.
Stevicâs testimony: âGreene made some minor contact to me...I didnât feel threatened at the time.â
